Do your personal values align?
At Mersey Care, we use values based questions as part of our recruitment process, to help us find people whose personal values match our own.
Our Mersey CARES model illustrates what qualities we look for and value most in our people, and as part of your application you will be asked how you demonstrate these values.
Some tips when answering values based questions
- Familiarise yourself with our values and think about how your values might align to ours
- If asked a values based question, don’t just say you share this value – give examples!
- Examples don’t have to be work based, they can draw from any area of experience including, for example, overcoming personal challenges.
Continuous improvement - Can you give an example that shows how you seek to continually improve yourself, processes or services in the pursuit of service excellence and commitment to quality? For example, innovation, improvement, and celebration.
Values based interview questions
- Describe the most challenging work-related issue you have come across.
- Tell me about a time you made a difference to someone’s day.
- Tell me about when you last asked for feedback on your own performance.
Accountability – Can you demonstrate, giving examples, the ways that you hold yourself and others accountable? Can you tell us a time where your commitment, ability to adapt, ownership and sense of responsibility have give you

- Tell me about a time where you felt it was necessary to treat a patient or colleague differently to accommodate their background or personal beliefs
- Tell me about a time you needed to handover important information to a colleague
- Tell me about a time when you were asked to do something you didn’t agree with or felt was wrong.

Enthusiasm – Are you enthusiastic towards new challenges? Do you approach things with an open mind? Do you remain positive in difficult situations? Do you take pride in what you do? We’re looking for candidates who can demonstrate that they approach all that they do with compassion, engaging, collaborating, and communicating well with others.
Values based interview questions
- Tell me about a time you felt disappointed by your own poor performance
- Describe a time when you were concerned about a colleague / staff members approach with a colleague/client/service user/patient
- Tell me about a person you provided care or support to.
Support –Think of examples of when you have supported another person, this may be a patient or a colleague. What was the result of this support? You may also want to read about Mersey Care’s Restorative Just and Learning Culture, to understand more about our Support value.

- Describe a time when you provided feedback to someone
- Tell me about a time when you were concerned about someone who was upset at work.
