Mersey Care has been successful in a bid for £1.7 million worth of funding towards improved energy efficiency from Great British Energy, the Government and devolved administrations to deliver community clean energy projects.
The funding was secured as part of a package of £100 million announced by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for NHS hospitals to install solar power and battery storage solutions to help drive down energy bills, offering better value for the taxpayer.
It will be used to improve Rowan View, our medium secure facility at Maghull Health Park. The installation of further solar panels and battery storage solutions are due to commence next month and are expected to be completed by March 2026.
Chief Sustainability Officer at NHS England, Chris Gormley said: ‘Thanks to the dedication of teams nationwide, the NHS has already implemented hundreds of projects that enhance energy efficiency and drive significant cost savings.
"This groundbreaking new investment, across 78 NHS Trusts on around 200 sites, will expand solar power generation within the NHS by over 300%, slashing energy costs by hundreds of millions of pounds. These vital savings can be reinvested directly into frontline care, ensuring the NHS continues to deliver for our patients and communities."
The installation of further solar panels and battery storage solutions underlines Mersey Care's commitment to a Green Plan, which includes objectives to:
- Reduce our carbon emissions
- Improve resource efficiency and reduce waste
- Improve our workplaces
- Prepare for our future with climate change.
Rowan View, opened during the COVID-19 pandemic, has previously won evironmental impact awards and was built to excellent environmental standards, which included a flower garden and green spaces as part of the facility.
Mersey Care's funding is one of 132 projects to benefit from the scheme, which are spread over 78 NHS Trusts covering around 200 sites in England.
