What is a Lateral Turning System?

A lateral turning system is an automatic turning system that can be used underneath most pressure relieving mattresses issued by our Community Equipment Services (CES) teams.

It is designed to offload pressure areas for those who are unable to reposition independently when in bed.

Safe use of a Lateral Turning System

There is a risk of entrapment if this equipment is not used correctly. Please follow the below tips to ensure safe use:

  • The service user or patient must be able to lie on their back centrally in bed
  • Bedrails and bumpers should be in situ
  • The backrest should only be elevated to a maximum of 30 degrees when the lateral turning system is in use
  • Ensure the lateral turning system is securely fitted to the bed frame
  • Service users or patients should not eat or drink while the turning system is in use
  • Seek advice from a healthcare professional if there has been a significant change in the service user's or patient's physical or mental abilities
  • Seek advice from a healthcare professional if the lateral turning system creates access or moving and handling issues.

When does the Lateral Turning System need a review?

The Lateral Turning System is ready for a review if:

  • The service user or patient is moving to the side when the system is inflating
  • The service user or patient is unable to tolerate lying at an angle of 30 degrees or less
  • The lateral turning system is not remaining in place
  • If there has been a significant change in the service user's or patient's physical or mental abilities
  • If there are any significant changes to posture or patient is no longer able to straighten legs.
