What are HIV and Syphilis?

HIV is a virus that weakens the body’s defensive immune system and it can be passed between sexual partners during oral, anal and vaginal sex, especially when condoms are not used. It can also be passed by sharing infected drug-taking equipment like needles/syringes. Antiviral medication is very effective at controlling the virus if the infection is diagnosed early.

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is also passed between sexual partners during oral, anal and vaginal sex.  It can cause sores, rashes, and long term skin, heart and neurological problems if left untreated. It can be cured with antibiotics.
