Specialist Treatment, Assessment and Recovery (STAR) Unit
Mersey Care provides acute inpatient assessment and treatment services for people with learning disabilities and additional needs at the STAR Unit. This was formerly located at Rathbone Hospital and then at Mossley Hill Hospital up to 23 December 2020. It is now located at Byron Ward, Hollins Park Hospital, Warrington.
We also support young people aged 16 to 18 people in transition from children’s services who are already in the care of learning disabilities consultant. This is assessed on a case by case basis.
Person centred care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team including psychiatry, nursing, psychology, speech and language and occupational therapy. The service links closely with local community services for all of the above disciplines.
The Care Quality Commission rated this service as Good in their 2019 inspection.
From 23 December 2020 Mersey Care took over the running of Byron Ward from North West Boroughs. Byron Ward will continue to support adults with a learning disability in Halton, Knowsley, St Helens and Warrington, but will also now support patients in Liverpool and Sefton, in line with Mersey Care’s existing commissioning arrangements for the STAR Unit.
