Drug dependency unit (DDU) – HMP Liverpool

The Drug Dependency Unit (DDU) provides a clinical drug and alcohol service centred on Methadone and Librium prescribing and works in association with the Lifeline Team, the prison healthcare team, partner agencies within the prison and in the community to provide a rehabilitation service to prisoners.

The DDU works to meet the specific challenges inherent in the delivery of care and treatment to this client group.

The service provides:

  • Screening and assessments in reception
  • Stabilisation on a licence opiate substitute medication
  • Standard opiate detoxification
  • Extended opiate detoxification
  • Opiate substitute maintenance
  • Safe and effective alcohol detoxification
  • Safe and effective management of benzodiazepine withdrawal
  • Clinical monitoring of stimulants withdrawal
  • Good quality joint working and case management between Lifeline Services and other teams.
