We are holding a quarterly series of nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals (AHPs) research and innovation forums. The forums highlight current research projects being undertaken by our clinicians and also provide support to staff who are interested in starting a research journey.

This is part of our commitment to establish a world class research and innovation environment to improve wellbeing and shorten the time it takes for effective innovations to reach patients. Supporting staff to be research active is an important part of this vision.

The last forum took place on 25 February 2025 at The Village Hotel, Whiston. The day was led by Dr Krystina Stanway and Dr Oladayo Bifarin and promoted research-led practice through strategic partnerships and skill development.

The day signposted our partnership with NHS Research and Development North West (NHS R&D NW). This aims to build research capacity within the trust by empowering staff to engage through mentorship and training, facilitating access to funding and co-creating a plan to embed research activities within clinical practice.

Throughout the forum, Mersey Care staff gave presentations on their research journeys and provided advice on how other health professionals can get involved in research activities.

Assistant Psychologists, Alexandra Jenkins and Lydia Guttridge gave a presentation about their project which explores staff and patient experiences of a sensory room in a female acute inpatient mental health setting.

Alexandra said: “The event was very enlightening and effectively demonstrated the different pathways into research. It successfully highlighted the importance of clinical practitioners leading research and breaking the barriers and culture around this systemically. The event allowed for networking and sharing of ideas which has provided opportunity to collaborate with others with similar ambitions in research.”
