Why do I need an ultrasound bladder scan?
The test is sometimes done to look for the amount of urine the bladder is able to store and/or whether the bladder is emptying completely following voiding (passing urine).
How would the test be performed?
The nurse will inform you of the procedure and reason for the scan. The nurse will then gain your consent before proceeding with the examination. You can have a chaperone present throughout if you wish. You may be asked to attend the clinic with a full bladder, or come early and drink water when you arrive until your bladder is full. Do not urinate before the procedure unless requested to do so by the nurse.
You will be asked lie upon an examination couch with only your lower abdomen exposed. A gel will be applied to the lower abdomen and a probe used to scan the area and a picture of the urine present in the bladder is shown on a screen.
The procedure may be slightly uncomfortable if your bladder is full but the scan will only last for a matter of minutes and then you will be able to empty your bladder.
If the scan was performed with a full bladder, you will be asked to empty your bladder, in private, and the scan repeated. Your dignity will be maintained throughout the procedure.
Are there risks to having an ultrasound bladder scan?
There are no risks with this procedure.
