Mersey Care is ready to welcome new students to Merseyside this Fresher's Week, making access to mental and physical health services easier than ever.

As one of the largest health trusts in the North West, we understand the excitement and challenges of starting university and are here to support students with their health needs.

Freshers' Week is an exciting time, and we want to make sure you have all the information you need to settle in and make the most of your time here. Whether you’re new to the area or just getting started with your university journey, take a look at our animation that has some key tips and resources:

Student services

  • University Support: Every university has a dedicated student services team. They can help with academic advice, mental health support, and accommodation issues. Make sure to familiarize yourself with their services.
  • Wellbeing: Your mental health matters. Universities offer counseling and wellbeing services, and you can also reach out to local organisations like Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust for support.

 Health services

  • GP Registration: It’s important to register with a local GP as soon as possible. Most universities have a recommended GP practice for students.
  • Emergency Contacts: Familiarize yourself with local emergency services and save important contacts on your phone. Don’t forget to save the NHS non-emergency number: 111.

Registering for a new doctor or dentist

Are you new to the region and need to find a doctor and dentist to look after your health needs as a student?

You can register for a doctor through the NHS website.

Safety tips

  • Stay Safe: Stick with friends during nights out, keep your belongings secure, and be aware of your surroundings. Use licensed taxis and consider downloading safety apps like SafeZone.
  • Support Services: If you ever feel unsafe, remember there are resources available, such as campus security and local helplines.

Getting around

  • Public Transport: Merseyside has excellent public transport links, including buses, trains, and the famous Mersey Ferries. Consider getting a student travel card for discounts.
  • Cycling: Liverpool is a bike-friendly city with plenty of cycle routes. If you plan to cycle, make sure you have a good lock and lights for your bike.

Local events and activities

  • Explore the City: Liverpool is known for its rich culture, music, and history. Check out local events, museums, and landmarks like the Albert Dock, Liverpool Cathedral, and The Cavern Club.
  • Freshers' Events: Your student union will organize various Freshers' events. It's a great way to meet people, join societies, and get involved in university life.

Student discounts

  • Save money: Many shops, restaurants, and transport services offer student discounts. Make sure to carry your student ID with you and look out for special offers during Freshers' Week.

Looking after yourself

  • Healthy Eating: It’s easy to fall into bad eating habits during Freshers' Week. Try to balance socializing with healthy meals and plenty of water.
  • Stay Active: Keep an eye out for gym offers and sports societies to stay active and meet new people.

We have urgent treatment centres (UTCs) and walk-in centres (WICs) across Cheshire and Merseyside.

If you need same day urgent care, please contact www.111.nhs.uk. It’s available 24 hours a day, seven days per week and they’ll know the best service for your treatment need.

You can also turn up to any of our UTCs and WICs without an appointment. Select your nearest site from the drop down menus below for further information. However, if its an emergency or a serious injury, you should dial 999 or go straight to A&E.
