Ashworth research centre

Ashworth Research Centre (ARC) is the only dedicated research centre in the UK based within a high-secure psychiatric facility. Our mission is to develop research that enriches the quality of patient care in forensic mental health by informing and enhancing clinical practice.

We aim to do this by:

  • Employing a reflective and multidisciplinary approach
  • Embracing creative and innovative methodologies that lead to scientific achievement
  • Actively developing collaborative external partnerships
  • Ensuring all research and evaluations have clear application
  • Promoting the importance of scientific research
  • Encouraging the sharing of ideas and information

ARC is a research partnership between Ashworth Hospital and the University of Central Lancashire. Our dedicated research team works on a broad range of projects concerning therapeutic environment, medication, psychological therapy, mental disorder, violence and aggression, and other issues of relevance to forensic mental health. The Centre is steered by a multi-disciplinary committee with representation from different fields at Ashworth Hospital.
