Performance in Initiating and Delivering Clinical Research

Performance in Initiating and Delivering Clinical Research

The Government's Plan for Growth, published in March 2011, announced the transformation of incentives at local level for efficiency in initiation and delivery of clinical research. The National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) therefore established 2 performance benchmarks, for specific research studies, that we and other NHS providers are measured against.

1) Initiating Clinical Research the 70 day benchmark: Clinical trials to be set-up and operational within a 70 day period (how quickly studies are set-up and recruited to)

2) Recruitment of commercial clinical trials to time and target (whether or not we've recruited the target number of patients in the timeframe we said we would)

The overall aim of these benchmarks is to increase the number of people who have the opportunity to participate in research.  As we are committed to the principle of setting up studies quickly and delivering agreed recruitment to time, we have welcomed these benchmarks.

We are now required to submit data on these 2 benchmarks on a quarterly basis.  The data only includes clinical trials we have approved since 1 April 2014 and any commercial studies that we have hosted during this same time period. Below are the performance figures for the period ended 30 September 2015.

Performance in Initiating and Delivering Clinical Research section:

Overall the Trust is currently supporting 91 studies (54 presently recruiting) comprising 32 adopted NIHR studies, 48 student and 11 other/own account studies.  In addition we have 34 studies pending.
