The seven winners claimed their awards despite more than 100 nominations for the apprenticeship programme at the university, where apprentices spend 20 per cent of their time studying for their degree and the rest of the time in local healthcare settings.
The awards they won were:
- Nursing Associate Apprentice of the Year: Andreea-Alexandra Androsca, community district nursing
- Registered Nurse Degree Apprentice of the Year - Aderonke Abadunmi, Mental Health Care
- Most Supportive Student Apprentice of the Year - Daniel Ward, Mental Health Care
- Most Inspirational Apprentice of the Year - Sarah Hoey, School Health
- Workplace Educator of the Year - Grace Higson, School Health
- Specialist Community Public Health Nurse of the Year - Josephine Brady, School Health
- Employer commitment to apprenticeships - Practice Education Facilitators, Claire Collister and Angela Charles.
Andreea-Alexandra, Nurse Associate was delighted to win an award and shared “I knew the nursing associate course was two years long and involved gaining practical skills while studying. I will qualify soon as a nurse associate and I plan to do the top-up course to become a fully qualified registered nurse. It’s all worth it, a demanding but very rewarding experience.”
Jenny Hurst, Mersey Care’s Chief Nurse, said: “Our partnership with Liverpool John Moores University is vital for providing our nursing apprenticeships with an excellent training programme that prepares them for a career in nursing.”
“We’re delighted so many of our apprentices have been recognised, and we hope this recognition will serve them well at the start of what we hope will be long and enjoyable careers with Mersey Care.”
Joanne Fisher, Principal Lecturer and Apprenticeship Lead for the School of Nursing and Advanced Practice at LJMU, added: “It was an absolute joy to host this event and to shine a spotlight on our apprentices, their employers and all those who play a part in apprenticeships.
“This is the second year we have hosted this event to mark National Apprenticeship Week and this year we received more than 110 nominations, many of which were for Mersey Care apprentices and the staff who support them. Congratulations again to all our winners and thank you to all Mersey Care staff who support and develop the apprentices.”
