Mersey Care dietitians support National Dietitians Week
Diet and nutrition can play a key role in both preventing and managing mental health, while good nutrition can also minimise the risk of developing long term conditions and speed up recovery after illness.
These are among the important messages dietitians in Liverpool will be promoting during National Dietitians Week .
The annual awareness week aims to highlight the fantastic work that all dietitians do to prevent illness or optimise health, be that in primary care or acute settings, industry or education.
Across the UK there is a growing belief that a greater focus on prevention and public health activity is going to be vital to reduce pressure on the NHS and social care services.
Diet and nutrition can play a key role in both preventing and managing mental ill health. Good nutrition and hydration can also help aid recovery and prevent relapse.
Other themes include the vital role that good nutrition plays in reducing the risk of developing diabetes and in assisting rehabilitation after surgery or a stroke.
Mersey Care will highlight the importance of good nutrition and in keeping well, both mentally and physically, as well as preventing illness.
For example a diet rich in vitamins and minerals can help improve your energy levels, mood and brain function. When feeling low we can choose foods that we associate with pleasure and rewards eg chocolate and takeaways. Therefore we are looking at ‘healthier’ takeaway and snack options.
Another theme is ‘optimising health and secondary prevention’ which highlights how support from a dietitian can help people with a health condition to manage symptoms, prevent complications and optimise their quality of life.
