In Mind: Chief Executive Joe Rafferty updates on supporting colleagues and festive knitwear

Supporting colleagues policy

I’m pleased to start this week’s blog by announcing the new trust wide supporting colleaguespolicy as part of our Just and Learning Culture. This policy follows discussions with staff and unions as to how to best support you after an incident. It will also promote staff support already available. It recognises that sometimes we may need compassionate help and both as individuals and an organisation we can provide that.

The policy is central to our vision of Just Culture and therefore a learning environment. We want everyone to feel supported by their colleagues and we want them to know they can access free and confidential services such as counselling and physiotherapy.

There’s a toolkit which includes a simple discussion checklist for managers to use when supporting a colleague after an incident. There’s also a discussion paper for teams to explore during their regular meetings. It’s a great opportunity to talk about what ‘support’ looks like.

Staff chair Mandi Gregory told me this week: “Everyone is in agreement that there needs to be a more compassionate, sympathetic and supportive approach, treating everyone with respect and dignity at all times,” and I couldn’t agree more.

Flu

I’ve said before that I think of the flu vaccination as an essential piece of personal protective equipment (PPE). I’ve heard all about the great work of the vaccinators visiting remote locations to see shifts throughout the day and night, giving everyone the opportunity to get their jabs.

As of 12.00 noon yesterday, we had reached 73.45 percent compliance but, once again, I strongly urge the waverers to put their patients and families first and request a personal visit from a member the team.

Christmas pictures

For those of you who don’t already know, today is Christmas jumper day when staff are encouraged to make a donation to Save the Children and, in return, wear their most festive knitwear.

We're going to be sending out the best pictues of our staff out on social media but for the time being, here are a couple of examples of Mersey Care supporting Christmas Jumper Day.
